family pinhole project in VAC
Family Pinhole in Hong Kong Park I remember back when taking family portraits used to be a grand event. Every member of the family would be impeccably clothed, arriving at the studio in strict punctuality. To me, family portraiture is an activity that manages to bring together the constituents of a family. However, with the development in photographic technology and acceleration of our everyday lives, very few families have managed to preserve the sense of familial solidarity and the significance behind a family portrait has grown obsolete. Hong Kong Park used to be the most popular spot for family day activities and events. With the emergence of large-scale malls, department stores and theme-parks in Hong Kong, the Park has lost the battle of offering the most extensive consumerist opportunities and of presenting to its public audience a designated theme. As a result, the typical Hong Kong family no longer frequents the Park and that past sentiment of casual, leisurely gathering has been obliterated. Through photography, I hope to respond to this current phenomenon. I created an activity called Family Day- Pinhole Photographs where with the most traditional photographic equipment, the pinhole camera, I take snapshots of families meandering through Hong Kong Park. Since the exposure time of pinhole cameras is comparatively long, families are required to the hold their poses for up to a few minutes . The freezing of families seem like as a monumental sculpture to remember the value of family. Fifty some families have then been captured within the Hong Kong Park.
