Flickr: Discussing wide angle lens in SONY ALPHA DSLR-A200
sigma Wide Converter - Google News Ithink it's already been suggested, but if you can't afford a complete wide angle lens, you could look at a wide converter. Raynox make some pretty damn fin ones. I have one of their telephoto converters, and it's brilliant. ...

Mixed Modes

This was assembled as a comparison of the transcoding results of shooting in a range of different modes available on the XL H1, as well as looking to compare depth of field and focus characteristics of the stock lens, with all its bells and whistles, and a relatively modest prime lens, a Sigma 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro (which with the conversion factor on the XL body, naturally looks more like a 50-70mm lens might on an SLR still camera, and which also loses its autofocus features. Lens converter used is Canon's EF Adapter XL. Those considering such an adapter, at least for the XL2 or XL H1, should be aware of the conversion factor -- this is not a cheap way to get a wider angle lens. Most of your lenses are likely to behave like extreme telephoto lens, and while the use of cheaper glass can give some nice gritty effects, the depth of field does not seem to be hugely more narrow here compared to what can be achieved with the stock lens, under appropriate lighting conditions. Then again, this is my fastest still lens. I shouldn't prejudice matters until I've done a lot more shooting with the adapter. So in summary, this was not a terribly scientific test, since all the shooting to date has been done in fairly low light conditions, where the DOF can be maxed out easily thanks to the need to keep that aperture wide open. Granted, in full sunlight, the DOF can be maxxed as well simply by increasing shutter speed, but that may not give a look you otherwise want to see. But in any case, aside from some of the outdoor shots done on the stock lens, there are no comparable shots from daylight conditions shown here using the 24mm prime lens. This video may be replaced once I've managed to do some more shooting. Also, I am trying to resolve a problem that seems to exist in capturing material shot in HDV 24F mode. Sony Vegas, at least, does not seem to be capturing this without using the frame drops to slice the files into hundreds of separate ones, so some of the HDV footage here was regrettably downconverted to AVI capture, rather than being captured in the higher resolution m2t transport format.

I've not tried a converter, but I suspect the image quality will suffer. Even in the old manual focus lenses there doesn't seem to be much in the way of cheap wide angles. I think a few hundred for the very popular sigma 10-20mm might ...

DSLR flicker video w. EXIF superposed

Another video to illustrate DSLR flicker; this time with EXIF info superposed in an attempt to help show what's going on. Unfortunately, as can be seen the EXIF info is just not reliable. All settings are fixed (including white balance) except exposure time; yet a lot of the flicker occurs while the exposure time is supposedly constant. Please note that the lens is wide open (it's a Sigma 20mm f1.8 lens with a Raynox fisheye converter stacked on top of it) throughout the sequence, leaving inaccurate diaphragm operation out of the question.
